Where is it going to be build in Malaysia?

If our neighbouring countries had a NPP reactor blow, will the radiation reach us?

Where to build? Borneo (Sabah or Sarawak)... Not a chance. There's already BAKUN over there to supply electricity. Well not yet but sooner. Ok, suppose our NPP is built in Borneo, how are we supposed to send the electricity to the peninsular where the demand is at peak? Transmission cables ya... Distance more than 1000km so we should use underwater sea cable. Can you imagine how much power loss will occur within 1000km cable? Suppose we increase the power. P=VI. Increase voltage? Not a chance. If there's a leakage then imagine 1000V or more in water. Increase current. Possible but high current flow would produce a strong electromagnetic field around it which could damage the eco system. Perhaps my colleague taking EE could explain more on this as it is neither my expertise nor preferences. It is actually not possible to do such a thing for now. Even if we manage it, the cost will be too high hence leaded to loss rather than profit. Profit (loss) = Total Revenue - Total Cost. I actually heard rumours saying we already have a spot for our NPP. It should be near the sea for the cooling loop system and easy transportation. Not around north east coast (Kelantan, Pahang, Johor, Terengganu) as it will be too "exposed". So the nominations are Penang,kedah, Perlis, Selangor, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and Johor. Owh ya Penang, Kedah and Perlis have a Tsunami history and hence can be excluded. Melaka also as its sea shore are too dense. I think the rumours stated Negeri Sembilan.

Radiation could actually be transferred in almost every possible way you could think of. It only depends on its intensity, shielding, and distance. Chernobyl incident occur in Ukraine, Europe. In several days, the United States of America detected that the radiation reached them followed by Japan. That’s just a simple indication on how far and how fast it can spread. It actually depends on the source radiation intensity where the intensity decreases as distance increase. We are talking about Indonesia and Thailand.

how big ground is needed to built NPP??

For 1000MW, NPP only requires 1km square of land area. Distance between NPP and residential area are normally set around 10km radius, depends on the government.

in peninsular still got plenty of land which we can built the NNP. i guess NNP doesn't need a big area which can effect the residential..

i also have thought of that idea,where they going to build the NPP,but my suggestion will be build near the seaside,and prevent from the residential area,although i know there is very little effect cause by radiation,this is to enhance public safety,i hope by 2020,we can have our own NPP,by the time we reach our status as well develop country.

Yup, 100% it won't be in Sabah/Sarawak... Even the Bakun energy can't be transmitted to the Penisular, too much energy will be lost. Not worth it... Best is to build it near the central of Penisular but of course there will be risks. I can't imagine if a reactor blows up but i doubt it will happpen... We got professionals to deal with the safety precautions which is the most important thing.

I agree with you that building it in the peninsular would be a better choice since there might be easier access to supplies for maintenance and fuel is accessed easily. Of course, the fear of a nuclear meltdown is always there since they have happened before. Which is why the R&D of safety on NPP is ongoing and very intense.

I would like to ans sivabalan's quetions but the number of npp needed to replace the current power plant.. I think 1 should be sufficient enough to power the entire peninsular. correct me if im wrong.

In my opinion, I think it doesn't matter where to build the nuclear power plant (surely not in Sabah or Sarawak) as long as we build it safely. Safety issues should be the top priorities to be focused on as we don't want any radiation leaked out from the power plant.

In my point of view the selangor state should be a good choice.As we know in this state there are tremendous industrial going on that will need not only a lot but also a constant power supply compare with other state.So rather than building it far from here and than cracking head thinking the way to transfer back, it is a wise choice to build it here..( VIMALAN A/l GENASAN vimalan_12@yahoo.com )

im from negeri sembilan actually,
i think, negeri sembilan would be suitable, since there still lot of undeveloped lands and there is sea water to be used as coolant.
and there is a army base in negeri, well that would contribute to safety part in case of any attack.
im sure Malaysia would consider all possibilities and do the best.

hi guys,
Nuclear power plant should be built in peninsular not sabah sarawak. I agree with vimalan's comment that npp should operate in Selangor state because of its high electricity demand compare to other states. At the same time, it certainly reduce the power loss because of its distance which is nearer.. In fact, seaside in selangor would be a more suitable place.(far from residential area).

It is very obvious that the building should be done in peninsular Malaysia. But sbah and sarawak has a bigger land compared to states in peninsular Malaysia. we could set up the power plant there but in order to transmit the power back to the whole Malaysia, we might have difficulties. But we could get the aid of the professional in teaching and solving the way to transmitted the whole energy with very less lost of energy. so everything needs an inmprovement.
